Multicast vs. P2P for content distribution

چکیده

Many different service architectures, ranging from centralized client-server to fully distributed are available in today’s world for Content Distribution on the Internet. The IP Multicast seemed to be a wonderful technology with potential benefits for one-tomany or many-to-many content distribution applications. However, even after more than two decades of its invention, only very few commercial applications of multicast are in use. On the other hand, the recent widespread use of peer-to-peer (P2P) applications such as SETI, Napster, eDonkey, BitTorrent and Gnutella indicate that there are many potential benefits to fully distributed peer-to-peer systems. In this position paper, we briefly describe service model and architecture of both Multicast and P2P networks and put forth the reasons for P2P being a better technology than Multicast for Content Distribution.

Content Distribution: P2P or Multicast

Content distribution is the original application of both multicast and peer-to-peer (P2P) technologies. Since they are two fundamentally different approaches, it is a controversy to discuss who plays better. In this position paper, I will argue that although multicast solution conserves some total network bandwidth consuming, P2P technique is better on content distribution applications in terms...

P2P Networks vs Multicasting for Content Distribution

Multicast seemed the only possible technique for one/many-to-many content distribution over many years. However we never had a world-wide content distribution network based on multicasting excluding some small and preconfigured networks such as mbone. Fortunately, today we have lots of content distribution networks such as gnutella, BitTorrent, eDonkey and Napster. All of these networks are bui...

Searching and Streaming of Multimedia Content in P2p Overlay Network

A significant part of the Internet traffic is generated by peer-to-peer (P2P) applications. P2P used traditionally for file-sharing, and more recently for real-time communications and live media streaming. With little knowledge of the underlying network topology such applications discover a route to each other through an overlay network. P2P could be a promising start for enabling large-scale s...

A Massively Scalable Persistent Content Distribution System

This paper proposes a novel form of peercasting system as an improved solution for IP-based mass media content delivery. Several approaches are discussed, some of which are already widely deployed, or undergoing such deployment, as homogeneous systems. In particular, IP multicast and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlay network techniques are described in isolation as they form the bedrock of the new pee...

Hybrid Content Distribution Network with a P2P Based Streaming Protocol

Multicast has been used as a one-to-many approach to deliver information; it is based on the idea that if one packet of data should be transmitted to several recipients, the information should be sent by the origin just one time. In this paper, we propose the use of IP based Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) to distribute content and to make distribution more efficient; we combine it with a P2P...
